The
realization of the Mid Kent Oncology Centre in 1992 brought to
the UK the first purpose built oncology centre for 20 year.
11 years
on the centre continued to provide treatment and diagnostic
facilities in an atmosphere which ‘engenders a sense of
optimism and reassurance’. However, the service needed to
expand to meet ever increasing demands for cancer treatments.
The extension is in 2 parts—3 concrete chambers one side with
waiting area overlooking the existing green plateau and
potential future courtyard—ancillary patient accommodation and
offices on the other. The high energy linear accelerator
machines required neutron and X-Ray shielding. Our role
included coordinating these various requirements—medical
equipment manufacturer, physicists, radiographers, clinicians,
patients—into the building processes to inform and to ensure
the facilities would meet those needs initially, as the
building is used, and when expanded in the future.
