The
existing fire station in the heart of a development area
becomes a children’s centre. The main fire appliances room on
the ground floor which housed the 5 fire engines becomes the
children’ centre with different age groups separated by
utility boxes with services dropping from the high ceilings on
ladder structures. Fire engine door openings both front and
back are infilled with glazed screens and timber panels. At
the back the fire engine yard becomes the playground with
covered play space and resilient rubber surfaces and cycle
track. Community rooms and offices are upstairs in the former
drill hall. The new extension houses the core facilities of
stairs, lift and toilets, with entry foyer and reception
facilities.
